Optimal Mental Health is related to Metabolic Health

Metabolic Health

The Elephant in the Therapist's room

People who are seeking relief from conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD will go to a therapist or psychiatrist and will receive medication or learn cognitive strategies, but Metabolic Health is not discussed.

The epidemic of poor metabolic health

We are in the middle of an epidemic of metabolic syndrome, and with it we are seeing a meteoric rise in diseases of civilization. At one end of the lifespan, Autism has increased to alarmingly high rates with some estimates at 1 in 33 children being diagnosed. On the other end of the spectrum, Alzheimer's disease has been increasing at a rapid pace. In the middle, there is an explosion of allergies, autoimmune conditions, PCOS, fatty liver disease, age-related macular degeneration, and thyroid disease, to name a few. These are coined 'diseases of civilization' because they were rare or non-existent prior to the 1900s.

Markers of metabolic health

Optimizing metabolic health leads to the reversal of many chronic diseases and the resolution of long-lasting depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.

Rates of mental illness are skyrocketing despite increased rates of treatment

Conventional treatments for mental health do not usually address metabolic health or diet. Many simple diagnostic tests can be conducted to reveal nutrient deficiencies, gut dysbiosis, or to detect markers of metabolic disease that are associated with depression, anxiety, rigid and disruptive behavior. Based in part on the results of testing, targeted changes in diet and lifestyle serve to break stubborn, long term cycles of anxiety and depression.

How is Metabolic Health Linked to Mental Health?

Rates of mental disorders including depression, anxiety and others have been increasing, as have prescriptions for antidepressant medication. Unfortunately, increased use of antidepressants has done little to curb the epidemic of mental disorders as we continue to see rates skyrocket. Moreover, research shows that long-term users of antidepressant medication continue to experience depression and anxiety, and also begin to develop metabolic syndrome

The Functional Medicine, or Biomedical or Integrative Approach

The Functional Medicine Approach works by developing an individualized plan based on an individual's presenting symptoms and lifestyle.

The functional medicine approach has demonstrated that it is possible to reverse and/or manage the symptoms of many conditions that were thought to be chronic and irreversible. There is a functional medicine approach to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and other dementias, multiple sclerosis, age-related macular degeneration, bipolar, schizophrenia and autism.

Books

Stay off My Operating Table

Heart surgeon Phil Ovadia MD discusses about how he learned about the importance of metabolic health only after he finish medical school and was a practicing heart surgeon. He outlines different ways to eat metabolically healthy, including giving options for people with different approached, including carnivore, Mediterranean, vegetarian and vegan.

This cover is very peaceful, it looks like an overview of an ocean. It states "Brain Energy - A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Understanding Mental Health; And Improving Treatment for Anxiety Depression, OCD, PTSD, and More." It is written by Christopher M. Palmer, MD.

Brain Energy

Groundbreaking book that documents research and clinical case studies of individuals who reverse yearslong disorders like depression, anxiety, OCD, Bipolar and Schizophrenia. According to the evidence, all metabolic disease is linked to disorders of mitochondrial functioning.

The cover is incredibly sparkly. The title is "Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind". The cover also states "A powerful plan to improve mood, overcome anxiety, and protect memory for a lifetime of optimal mental health". It is written by Georgia Ede, MD

Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind

Coming in January 2024, this is another book that highlights the connection between diet and mental health. Georgia Ede MD is apioneer in this field who is responsible for publishing much of the research on this topic with worldwide relevance.

This cover has a photo of a bottle of vegetable oil, but this vegetable oil bottle has a skull and bones placed on it. The title is "The Ancestral Diet Revolution", it also states "How vegetable oils and proccessed foods destroy our health - and how to recover!" The book is written by Chris A. Knobbe, MD.

Ancestral Diet Revolution

Chris Knobbe MD is the founder of the Cure AMD foundation (Age-related macular degeneration). He learned that AMD, a disease that first started appearing in the middle of the 20th century, is reversible and or treatable with diet and lifestyle changes. He has been studying the diets and lifestyle habits of populations across the world and has found that these 'Diseases of Civilization' begin to develop only after populations begin to add processed food to their diets.

The cover includes a group of people sitting and reading books on a field. The title is "Finally Focused". It also states "The breakthrough Natural Treatment Plan for ADHD that restores attention, minimizes hyperactivity, and helps eliminate drug side effects." It is written by James Greenblatt, MD and Bill Gottlieo, CHC.

Finally Focused

James Greenblatt MD outlines his approach to treating ADHD. As a psychiatrist, Dr Greenblatt prescribes medication, however he points out that medication side effects as well as lack of effectiveness of medication is often associated with vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Correcting these deficiencies serves to reduce or eliminate side effects, reduce the total amount of medication required, or reduces the need for any medication at all.

This cover is the title in big text "Why We Get Sick" with a scientific design inside of it. Above the title it states "The hidden epidemic at the root of most chronic disease - and how to fight it". It was written by Benjamin Bikman, PhD.

Why We Get Sick

Ben Bikman PhD goes deep into the science of why we get sick. In this important book, he outlines how insulin resistance is a main link or driver of chronic disease. Diabetes, Type 1 and 2 result from insulin resistance in the body, while Alzheimer's is often called type 3 diabetes as it is associated with insulin resistance in the brain. There are lots of links between his theory and those proposed by Chris Palmer MD in Brain Energy and Chris Knobbe MD in his work. In short, insulin resistance makes it harder for glucose to enter the mitochondria. Insulin resistance is caused in part by elevated levels of sugar and carbohydrate consumption, and it is also likely caused by the consumption of industrially refined 'seed oils' .

This cover is the title in big text, "The Alzheimer's ANTIDOTE". It also states "Using a Low-carb, high-fat diet to fight Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, and cognitive decline." It states that it is a "comprehensive metabolic & lifestyle approach". It is written by Amy Berger, MS, CNS, NTP.

The Alzheimer's Antidote

Amy Berger MS outlines how to safely implement a low-carb and high-fat diet for the treatment of Alzheimer's, mild cognitive impairment and other disorders of aging.

The cover includes examples of the recipes included in the book. The title states: "Sugar-free kids". Under this text is the writing "Over150 Fun & Easy Recipes to keep the Whole Family Happy & Healthy". The book is written by Maria Emmerich.

Sugar Free Kids

Loads of sugar-free and low-carbohydrate recipes. Plus, the first chapter is a great reference for important dietary principles including child protein requirements, which fats to prioritize and/or avoid, and the differences between various protein sources (spoiler alert, all protein is not equal!).

On the cover of this book is a baby, there is a big label stating "Expert Advice from Medical Professionals". The title states: "How to Prevent Autism". It is written by Dara Berger.

Preventing Autism

An inspiring story about both Autism recovery and Prevention. Dara and her family approached the healing process as a family, which is the only way to go in my opinion. This led to health improvements in both Dara and her husband along with a reversal of her son's autism. Through the successful application of these principles, she may have also prevented Autism from developing in her second child. There is no way to prove this, of course, but it makes sense since it has been demonstrated repeatedly in the scientific literature that poor parental metabolic health leads to increased incidence of Autism, ADHD, Intellectual disability and other conditions.

On the cover of this book is a mother and child's silhouettes in front of a beautiful sunset. The child is also wearing a cape. The title states "Warrior Mom". Under this title it states, "A mother's journey in healing her son with autism". It was written by Tracy M. Slepcevic.

Warrior Mom

An inspiring story about healing autism that outlines different treatment options and how parents can help recover or optimize functioning in children with Autism.
